Thoughts

To many she was Mama Tomi, to anther cross section of the public she was either Sisi Joke or Aunty Joke. And that’s not all, different people in her world had diverse modes of addressing her. I would stick to mine, which was simply “ Mummy” She was in so very many ways like the proverbial “ mother hen” who went the extra mile to see to the progress, well being and protection of not only her biological children, but us all who were in her orbit. I recall that one of her biological daughters once had course to say to me; “ Femi, my mum loves you with a passion” Yes she did, and glaringly so too. She was extremely hospitable and generous to all who visited 10 Mekunwen Rd Ikoyi. I remember my bachelor days, whenever I considered it unsafe to head back to the mainland after a wild night of carousing and partying , it was at the chalet I ended up, and in the morning she would insist that I had breakfast before setting out. If Tomi was around you can bet that I would not leave till late afternoon. Let me not even mention what went down during those weekend sleepovers. And to her husband, the Late Chief H O Davies QC Kt of blessed memory, she acquitted herself tremendously in her diligent role of a worthy affectionate consort, particularly in the old man’s final days. Now that she has embarked on a route which we all must traverse someday, all we can do is to thank God for her life and wish her a smooth journey. My special condolences go to Sis Bunmi, Tomi, Funlayo, Bimbo and Tokunbo. Farewell, Mummy. We will miss you. Femi Ifaturoti Washington, DC USA

Aunty Joke ( aka Grandma Neasden) My dear Aunty was a mummy to me ever since i can remember. When I was a young child I could not wait to visit my Aunty and late Uncle as their place was a home away from home. I remember those memories of our childhood days with my cousins in Berkeley and Strachen streets. Weekends at Takwa Bay .To our teenage days in Agard street Yaba, our youth days in Mekunwen Ikoyi and summer holidays in the flat in Neasden London . My Aunty was always welcoming and made time for each person she met .Aunty loved cooking and stuffing us and our friends with different delicacies . By the time I moved to the Uk, Aunty embraced my husband Joe as her son and was Grandma Neasden to my children Chialuka and Olisa . She knew Joe’s favourite dishes (Beans and Efo ) and always prepared his own portion and would call him to come and pick it up before Tokunbo pounced on it . ( This would also include goodies for me and the children). Aunty would stop by at our home in Wembley Park on her way back from her many bus ride exploration especially when my mum ( Sisi Eniola as she fondly called her ) was around . My Aunty knew her bus routes, more so when she got her Freedom pass to travel for free. Aunty would share stuff she had purchased and let us know of a new grocery place , markets or clothing store she had discovered . That meant my mum was off with her on the next Adventure . Aunty Joke was the one who introduced us to the Wembley and Willesden market. Not to forget , Joe and I always received the morning devotion prayers from her every morning to start us off on a spiritual walk every day. I will cherish always, your happy smile, love and kindness . Rest on with the lord Aunty Amen 🙏🏾
